4 Top Tips for Staying Positive
Climbing the ladder in the corporate world is an inspiring and challenging time. Your aspirations
and plans keep you motivated most of the time, but occasionally the working week can get you
down. Hitting a glass ceiling, negative colleagues, awkward clients or just not feeling the love can
leave you down and slightly blue. The critical thing to learn is how to flip the bad back to good so
that you can minimise the damage to your mood and get yourself back on track quickly. Here are some top tips for staying positive.
When a situation starts to send you down, the first thing you should do is take five. As soon as
possible head for the restroom or even better, outside. Take a deep breath and remind yourself
that this will pass. Whether the cause of your negativity is going to be easy to resolve or possibly
something that will hang around for longer, it will come to an end. Manage the negative in short
bursts taking time out for a quick breath every time things start to overwhelm you.
Positive Mental Attitude
From all the best self-help business books of the 80’s comes the good old PMA. Now, while this
may seem like a dated concept, the fact is we can choose how to react. How you respond to
others and situations really is within your control. It is fair to say you cannot stop every problem
arising but how you interact and react is yours to decide. When life is on the up practice this until it
becomes a habit so when life throws you lemons you automatically look for the positive and right,
even when you are feeling slightly down.
Build a Network
The most successful people in the world did not walk alone. Only you can put the work in and
develop your career for success but have a network of support. From professional advisors to
friends and family it is essential that you have some sounding boards. Pick people who also value
a positive mindset and steer clear of the negative nellies and drama divas. Offer your support in
return, and before long you have created a positive support network. Sometimes coffee and a
chat, with someone adding the positivity you have temporarily mislaid can make all the difference
to your mindset when you return to the office to deal with the problem.
Stay on Form
Situations are more likely to get you down if you are not on form. This means that as well as
keeping your mindset positive you need to be actively looking after your body. Sleep well, be sure
to create an environment where you get the rest you need. Eat properly, even if you are busy.
Find ways to get good food if that means eating out or blagging a home cooked meal off family.
Get out in the world and exercise. Hitting the gym is a great way to keep fit but so is getting out
and embracing nature. Walk run or cycle, just be sure to exercise.
